Test build 3 is available

This update mostly brings a UI redesign.  It is now possible to browse threads in tabs.  Tabbed browsing has come at the expense of the tablet layout, but I think more people use Mimi on phones than tablets.  Please let me know if I’m wrong about this.

Changes

What works
– Tabbed browsing
– Posting and replying should work
– Refreshing tabs and topics
– ActionBar drop down selector

What doesn’t work
– The ActionBar spinner doesn’t always show the correct item
– History and watch list doesn’t work
– Sorting boards doesn’t work

Installing over the previous one causes crash on launch. Update looks great and is smooth, can’t wait for the final version. Great job.

That definitely shouldn’t happen. Thanks for letting me know. I’ll see if I can figure out what’s causing it to crash.

yes this tabbed view works well, but see the android design guidlines regarding the sidebar (new icon for sidebars and only swipe from the very left to open sidebar, it’s all on android developers site). i use mimi on both my phone and tablet and would be happy with this on a tablet, but maybe keep the side bar open and have images larger. or show all boards and watchlist in the left pane and tabbed view on the right

That I/O talk on Android UI was really interesting. I don’t hold myself to the design guidelines too strongly, but I think the sidebar conforms. If you’re in a thread tab, you can slide the sidebar out by swiping from the far left edge. However, if you’re on the board list tab, swiping left from anywhere will open the sidebar.

What sidebar icon are you referring to? I don’t quite follow your meaning.

That’s a good idea about keeping the sidebar open on tablet devices. I’ll give it a try.

I found myself opening the sidebar when I really want to switch between tabs. The icon used on the action bar to differentiate a sidebar and the ‘up’ action has been introduced at I/O and the new Play apps use it. Three lines on the top left which slide off the screen when the sidebar opens. Also regarding the sidebar, I think it takes up too much of the screen when opened, see Play Music or Google Earth for reference

Excellent! Thank you for the feedback. I was wondering if that sidebar swipe would be an issue.

I’ll disable the swipe from tabs other than the first one. It will still be possible to get to the sidebar by pressing the icon in the upper left corner.

I’ll also take a look at using the new icon. It makes sense instead of the arrow.

Being able to swipe in the gallery is one of the most requested features — and rightly so. It would be way more convenient to do that. The one thing holding it back is a good GIF decoder. I’ve tried three of them so far and they all work great until the devices crashes from out of memory errors.

Even with just one image on the screen, it can take up all available memory and then some. As soon as I can figure out a way to load large GIFs without crashing, I’ll implement swiping in the gallery.

Thanks for the reminder. It should be a fairly simple change, but I keep forgetting to implement it.

A nice addition would be scrolling to the post when long pressing or double tapping instead of the post just popping up all the time. This would make reading large threads much easier, esp. if you like skipping a lot of the thread.

Another nice thing might be a reply-to option in the reply box which if you press it, it takes you back to the thread where you can select the post you want to reply to.

Those two features will be handled eventually, but not quite in the way you suggest. When you’re viewing a reply to a post, you will be able to tap on it to be taken to the post. I just haven’t hooked that up yet.

Again, another feature not hooked up yet is the ability to reply to a specific post with or without a quote. There’s usually a menu that pops up when you tap on the triangle near the post number across from the poster name. You can choose to reply or quote.

Also another thing would be when you view an image and then move to another image using the image viewer, can you make it so that when you go back to the thread you are at the post which has that image in it?

This is a great piece of software btw, which is kind of why I am requesting all these little things.

It shouldn’t take you back to the top of the thread after viewing images. I’ll make sure to fix that.

I’m glad you like the app. Thanks for the feedback. It’s very helpful.

I think he was trying to say for example if you open the first image in a thread and get to the last image, you are able to view the post in the thread view. This is a good idea imo

Did you consiser handling the test builds through Google communities i.e. Google play ? Might be more convenient to use.

I think it would be much easier instead of having to check the site every now and then it would just update XD
